Feedback Studio Improves Student Writing and Deters Plagiarism

St Michael’s adopts Feedback Studio to improve student writing through consistent rubrics and personalised feedback while saving teachers time.

St Michael’s College in Queensland, Australia, is a co-educational Catholic College for approximately 950 students years 7 to 12.
Challenge

St Michael’s had been using Turnitin software for over 10 years in order to support the school’s academic integrity policy. When Turnitin released Feedback Studio in 2016 to support grading and feedback in addition to plagiarism checking, the College adopted the tool as soon as it became available. With both the Similarity Report and grading and feedback features as resources, St Michael’s endeavored to improve student writing and deter plagiarism through more engaging and personalised feedback.

Results

St Michael’s is very happy with how Turnitin Feedback Studio supports academic integrity, helps enable student improvement and development through the entire writing process, and saves teachers valuable time.

Ben Edwards, the eLearning Leader at St Michael’s, lauds Quickmarks stating, “One of the biggest benefits of using Turnitin Feedback Studio is using Quickmarks to aid with quality and consistency of feedback to students.”

Edwards finds Turnitin Feedback Studio to be invaluable in helping him manage his workload. He estimates up to 50 percent time savings in marking and correction when using Turnitin Feedback Studio compared to traditional methods. “There are only so many hours in a day,” he says, “so when I mark student work, I want to ensure the feedback is meaningful and done in the most efficient manner possible. Turnitin Feedback Studio has streamlined my workflow for collection of assessments, marking, providing detailed feedback--and now returning this information to students is just so easy.”

He adds, “I can check assessment items have been submitted on time and I can provide detailed feedback quickly and easily. I can also allocate grades without delay and students can get these grades anytime.”

Teachers at St Michael’s College use rubrics within Feedback Studio to make marking and grading consistent across all departments. Use of the service is being streamlined across the College. Edwards says, “The flexibility of being able to grade every type of student assignment, including those for subjects like maths and art, is a huge advantage.”

It’s not only the teaching staff who find Feedback Studio helpful-- feedback from students is also very positive. As Edwards points out, “They [students] love the fact that they know they can get their feedback quickly, online, from anywhere at any time after the results have been posted.”
